BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Chandler Owner’s Guide

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT keypads and intercoms fall into several product families, and matching the right repair part requires reading the label inside the housing, not guessing from the button layout. The Q-BO series includes the Q-BO Touch (surface-mount with blue backlight) and the older Q-BO Code (non-backlit, four-wire connection). The THALIA line covers the THALIA P (proximity reader and keypad combo) and THALIA A (audio intercom only). The LITHOS series is the heavy-duty outdoor keypad with metal buttons, less common in residential Chandler but found on several commercial gates along Chandler Boulevard.

To identify your unit, pop the front cover using the two lower tabs. The white BFT label lists the model code and a 10-digit serial number starting with the year of manufacture. Pre-2018 units use a four-wire bus; 2018 and newer use a two-wire digital bus that carries both power and data. This matters because a new keypad on an old controller won’t communicate, and vice versa. • Intercom call button works, but voice is garbled or one-way. The speaker or microphone element has degraded, or moisture has entered through a compromised gasket. • Gate opens randomly or accepts any code. The main processor has corrupted memory, often from voltage spikes when the operator motor kicks on. This is a security issue, not just a convenience problem. We replace the logic board and install a small surge suppressor on the keypad power feed to prevent recurrence.
• Keypad is completely dark and unresponsive. Power supply failure at the keypad or a break in the low-voltage run. We test voltage at the keypad terminals first. If the line reads 0V, we trace back to the operator’s accessory output or the separate 24V transformer that many BFT systems use.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check whether the keypad has power by looking for any backlight glow in dim light, and you can verify that the gate operator itself still responds to remote controls or the manual release. If the operator works but the keypad doesn’t, the problem is isolated to the keypad or its wiring.

Where DIY goes wrong: BFT keypads run on 24V AC or DC depending on the model, and the terminal labels are small. Reversing polarity won’t always blow a fuse immediately, but it degrades the protection diodes over weeks. More importantly, opening the housing exposes the electronics to Chandler’s dust and static.
