On OEM versus aftermarket: Mighty Mule’s factory arm brackets are stamped 11-gauge steel with a powder coat that holds up reasonably well in Chandler’s dry heat but can chalk and crack at the bend radius after four or five summers. Signs Your Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags and the bottom edge scrapes the driveway. This usually means the lower hinge bracket has elongated its bolt holes or the weld between the bracket and the jamb plate has cracked. The Mighty Mule arm keeps pushing, but the geometry is wrong, so the motor draws extra amperage and the control board logs an obstruction fault.
• You hear metal-on-metal clanking when the gate starts or stops. The stop bolt or catch plate has worn through its bushing, or the fabrication that holds the stop has fatigued. On dual-swing systems, this often shows up first on the master leaf because it carries the interlock load.
• The opener arm has pulled away from the gate frame by an inch or more. The mounting bracket welds have failed, or the through-bolts have wallowed out the gate tubing. In Chandler, we see this on hollow aluminum tube gates where the original installer used self-tapping screws instead of through-bolts and backing plates.
• The post itself moves when the gate cycles. The concrete footing has cracked, or the post bracket has rusted through at the soil line. This is common on older installations in Chandler’s Eastmark and Ocotillo areas where the original posts were set in sandy fill without proper rebar cages.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things a homeowner can safely check. Make sure the gate moves freely by hand with the opener disconnected. Verify the stop bolt is present and not backed out. Look for fresh rust streaks below any bracket, which usually means water is getting inside a hollow tube.

What we don’t recommend: cutting or welding gate steel without proper ventilation and a fire watch, or attempting to straighten a bent arm bracket with a come-along and hope. The spring tension in a loaded swing gate can release without warning, and aluminum gate frames require TIG or MIG with argon shielding, not the flux-core wire feeder most homeowners own.
